On April Fools 2017, Reddit hosted a collaborative, multiplayer drawing board known simply as /r/place. Consisting of a grid of pixels of size 1000x1000, the state of the board was chaotic, to say the least. Multiple factions arose during this time, mostly consisting of already existing subreddits, most notably /r/de, /r/prequelmemes, and other, newer factions made specifically for the event such as /r/ainbowroad and /r/placehearts.

One faction that was already existing before /r/place happened was /r/osugame. A subreddit for the popular "rhythm" game osu!, this subreddit decided to dedicate their time to placing a logo of their game on the drawing board, or "canvas". Initially, the proposed logo was small, only 12 or so pixels in diameter, and was placed around the coordinates (614,880). However, this effort was not very coordinated, and was easily taken over by the Charmander from /r/pokemon. A second effort was made around (589,801) and involved a much larger logo, approximately 20 pixels in diameter. This logo was much more organized, and lasted for a much longer time, but was quickly abandoned and was speedily replaced by the St. Louis Blues logo.

It was at this point that a large, coordinated effort began to take shape. Beginning with large-scale discussions in discord servers such as "osu!Discord Community", and the official /r/osugame discord, a new server was created for the purpose of creating this logo, known simply as "osu! Logo Builders". Around this time, the ambitious idea of making a 100x100 recreation of the osu! logo was floated, and eventually it was decided that it would happen. The pink pyramid at the bottom of the canvas towards the center was chosen as the site for the new logo.

In the process of creating the osu! logo, five artworks were destroyed;

  1. The Philippines' flag created by /r/philippines
  2. A D.Va bunny, created mostly by /u/PM_ME_BUNNY_PICS
  3. A rubber duck, maintained by users from /r/duckplace
  4. Jake the dog from the show Adventure Time, and
  5. Finn the human from the same show, both efforts from /r/adventuretime.

After the logo was completed, the main focus was on maintaining the logo from stray pixels that people had placed. However, due to influence from the popular streamer "tyler1", a large coordinated effort was made to completely replace the osu! logo with black pixels. This effort from tyler1's viewers was furthered by the fact that multiple anti-osu posts were upvoted to the front page of /r/place, some even reaching over 9000 upvotes.

The situation was bleak at this time. The logo was virtually completely replaced by black pixels, with barely no border and no lettering to be seen at all. However, the osu! users outlasted the raiders by simply sticking around until they got bored, and eventually rebuilt the entire logo..

It was at this point that the filipino flag that osu had broken was rebuilt, this time vertically with the aid of /r/osugame users. /r/adventuretime was also given space to make a BMO figure on the bottom left corner of the logo. /r/placestart was also given the bottom 3/4ths or so of the logo to make a giant start bar, in exchange for osu! having an icon on the start bar itself. Plans were made and templates were drawn up to incorporate the destroyed D.Va bunny from Overwatch into the osu! logo by making it the "o" in "osu!". These plans succeeded for a short while, but failed as the griefing restarted /r/swordartonline had a logo on the top left corner of the osu! logo, consisting of two swords crossed together and the word "/r/SAO" written above them.

From then on, a stalemate was reached, and the members of osu! had some breathing room while America slept. A lot of rebuilding was done during this time, and even the words "/r/osugame" were written on the logo itself.

When the day started for North America on the 3rd of April, griefing began anew, but in a different style. While the focus of previous griefers was to simply replace the osu! symbol with black, the new griefers seeked to confuse the builders by placing duplicates of pixel art that was placed by osu!'s allies, and also extending existing pixel arts (such as /r/SAO's black sword.)

The war ended on approximately 6:00 pm UTC, when /r/place was closed - a full 72 hours after the initial opening.
