The first one. THE FUCKING FIRST ONE.

Almost 10k articles.

We have 16,070 articles. I feel like we should be making a big deal out of this or something. --zaiger (talk) 16:52, 7 December 2011 (CET)

Unfortunately, not all of those are articles:
This also is a sign that we aren't deleting and tagging enough junk. --JuniusThaddeus 17:15, 7 December 2011 (CET)
NO! The MOAR articles the BIGGER our E-PENIS becomes! Shun the non-believer...shhhhuuuuuunnnn! --Onideus 17:25, 7 December 2011 (CET)
We will have to count all of the non article pages sometime and see what we come up with. Also maybe we should do a clean up, but I want to assign people to do the actual deleting. People should start tagging shit and at the end of 2 weeks or something a couple of us will go through all of the tagged articles and delete the ones that are really shit. I want to do it that way because I don't want people just deleting everything with a death notice template on it without even looking at it, that is like my biggest pet peeve. I remember when Emilyplays was tagging shit and Ryan was deleting it everything s/he was tagging, they were deleting policy pages and fucking portal templates and articles that were like from the very beginning. It seriously looked like they just hit the random page button and just deleted whatever came up. I want people who actually know the wiki to be deleting shit is what I am trying to say, neither of them knew the wiki well enough to be deleting anything and I don't want repeat of that. I don't want to have to spend hours undeleting shit and cleaning up after it. Not too much pruned, just the really really shitty stuff. --zaiger (talk) 17:33, 7 December 2011 (CET)
I doubt there's really that much crappy stuff that needs deleting, usually when someone puts up an obvious spam/incoherent/retard page it almost never lasts more than just a few hours. Most of what can be deleted is probably gray area stuff to begin with...like, srsly, how many tweenage furfag MS Paint "artists" with an ass load of USI do we really need individual pages for? But I doubt most of that stuff is putting any real kind of drain/strain on the whole of the site and, if anything, it is like a form of cheap advertising. A lot of those generic pages are good just for seeding general butthurt in various communities, which attracts moar attention to the site. If we start being too picky people will likely start to see the site as being elitist rather than about the lulz. Overall I think it's better to ~improve~ articles, or at least ~try~ to improve them before considering deletion. --Onideus 17:48, 7 December 2011 (CET)
A lot of them just need a bit more content too, like the "shitting rainbows" page, that was just a tiny little stub originally but then me and others ~looked~ for more content to add and made the page halfway decent. There's LOTS of good material out there that can be used to fix/improve a lot of pages that might otherwise wind up labeled as shit. You should always consider/think about how the page could be improved before you consider marking it for deletion. --Onideus 17:58, 7 December 2011 (CET)
True. That has always been my stance, I am an extreme inclusionist. I just think that there may be a few articles that could be scrapped, mostly user space shit. --zaiger (talk) 18:13, 7 December 2011 (CET)

Kook Awards

It would be neat to see an ED version of the alt.usenet.kooks "Kook Awards": http://www.coloneljake.com/AUK/AAD/

With monthly voting and what not. It would encourage people to find new lulzy kooks to make pages about to try and win their kook an award so to speak. Kook promotion and so forth. I haven't been to AUK in several years, so I have no idea if they even still do their awards or not, but I'm guessing they're pretty well dead at this point. It would be nice to revive some of the uber old school trolling culture we came up with back in the 90s.

Kooks could also be lured to the forums and, rather than banning them, play with them and try and get them to kook out, make spastic threats, etc, etc.

It's actually really ironic when you think about it, GirlVinyl actually started out on Usenet but got verbally fisted in every other direction, which is what caused her to run off to the world wide waste in the first place. It would be kind of a nice slap in her face to turn "her" Encyclopedia Dramatica into an extension of the very thing that originally boot fucked her.  :)

Partial Banning

Instead of banning people who try and blank articles it might be moar fun to simply restrict them to talk pages and limit their editing capabilities to so many new lines/words/posts per day, that way they can be poked at to incite epic lulz and further kookplosions. Indirectly and unknowingly contributing to the very article they hate so much. A system could also be put in place to prevent redundant spam posts as well as flooding, so their only real option would be to "let out their feelings" and tell us all how they ~really~ feel. :3 --Onideus 09:20, 12 December 2011 (CET)

Perhaps we should modify MediaWiki:Blockedtext in a way that encourages blocked users to use their "User talk" pages to whine, and then users watching Special:RecentChanges could argue with them. That would be close enough to what you have in mind. --JuniusThaddeus 01:51, 13 December 2011 (CET)
For the most part, ED vandals generally have no clue how MediaWiki works, nor will they be likely to begin to argue after being banned. They just close down IE and cry to themselves. I suppose it could be encouraged, but not much will come of it. 02:06, 13 December 2011 (CET)
That's part of my point though, most of them who try and blank articles are under the delusion that it can't be undone with a few clicks of the mouse and, I think most, once they see that, will realize it's pointless and then either give up or try and "talk it out" as their only viable recourse. Obviously there are some persistent little spergs who will keep trying, but I think a lot of them will simply stop when they see that they can't actually do anything to the article, from their perspective, as a n00b, it seems like the article is magically restoring itself automatically.
Another idea might be to try and redirect them to the forums, or a specific sub-section of the forums, where they can bitch, moan and whine about it. It would likely be a good idea to give them the false impression that there's a chance of getting the article taken down if they "talk it out". If you delude them into believing there's such a chance you can keep them frothing indefinitely. It might even be fun to setup a complex troll, making them do all sorts of strange, kooky shit, under the belief that it will make the article go away. Sort of like the various scams that trick people into filling out endless "surveys" believing that they're somehow going to get something out of it. --Onideus 02:20, 13 December 2011 (CET)

Mmmm, I don't really know that much about MediaWiki, is it like a GUI sorta deal? Looking at the source code I can see how/where to put it in, but I have no idea if it would mess anything else up. A lot of times cookie cutter setups are pretty picky about making changes.
Looks like you need this: -div class="generated-sidebar portlet" id=""- -/div-
Give it an id and just slap it in between:
-div class="portlet" id="p-tb"- -/div-
and
-div class="generated-sidebar portlet" id="p-portals"- -/div-
Change the minuses to < > obviously. --Onideus 08:50, 13 December 2011 (CET)

Starting over is not always the best solution. If you feel you can give it a whirl (if you aren't 100% confident, just copy the source to your userspace) give it a re-write. Remove the tl;dr sections, make it funnier and find some of the lost pictures. ~Oblique 04:57, 14 December 2011 (CET)

what the fuck

The next time someone redirects and locks an article in progress I am going to request they are stripped them of their privs and they are given to those who are actually creating content. I have had to revert these actions 3 times in the last week or so by 3 different editors and it is pissing me off. You guys can't delete articles, you don't have the privs, and that's for a reason. Redirecting and locking them, aside from being a total abuse of the privs you do have, totally destroys any chances that the article will ever be improved or a better article with the same name will ever be created in it's place. Most of the time I see this happening as soon as the article is created. Very rarely is a good article created in one or two edits. This is a Wiki, which means it is a cumulative effort. Just because you don't "get it", or because you don't think a topic is worthy of being written about does not mean that someone else won't. This isn't the old ED, we don't redirect articles to userspace and we certainly don't redirect them anything else with the sole intention of making it impossible for anyone to improve on it. Also, we allow new users to learn how to edit here, so let them fucking learn. If you don't think a subject is worthy of existing, slap a template on it and WALK THE FUCK AWAY. Let someone who actually has the privileges to get rid of an article make that decision. I am dead fucking serious, Sysops are the only ones who can delete an article. If you are not a Sysop, use a template. That is what they are for. If I see this happening again I am going to start requesting people's privileges are given to the people who actually create content instead of hindering it. --zaiger (talk) 18:32, 14 December 2011 (CET)

It's not really 10k articles. The site statistics count the countless portal template pages and subpages (which is another good reason to not move new articles to user space). It's probably closer to 96 or 9700 I would guess, considering that we don't have the 6 or 7 years worth of userspace articles from ed.com (If those even count towards the total). --zaiger (talk) 16:09, 16 December 2011 (CET)

It might be fun to setup something like this: http://lafinjack.net/images/random/form.jpg

Only make it like 30 pages long and have minimum word requirements on text sections (so they have to write out reams of text) and then actively advertise it as like the "article removal request form". The government (at any level) can pass as many silly little rules, laws and regulations as they like regarding the Internet, but at the end of the day they all amount to little more than just overly impotent, inconsequential political blustering at it's best.
The nature of the Internet itself was inherently designed to be open and uncontrollable, a free system for all with NO ONE having any sense of absolute control or authority. As such, any attempts to impose control, authority or regulation over the grid will fail simply by design." --Onideus 06:43, 15 December 2011 (CET)

If they haven't the intelligence and comprehension to figure out how to circumvent the government's idiocy then they've no business at all having free speech or any other freedom. "The campaign was launched immediately after the passing of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) in the United States on February 1, 1996, followed by the Black World Wide Web protest on February 8, 1996, and remained popular throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s. The Communications Decency Act was ruled unconstitutional in large part by the Supreme Court on June 26, 1997 in a joint ACLU/EFF suit. EFF relaunched the campaign on June 15, 1998 to raise awareness of other legislation that they felt threatened freedom of expression online, especially the CDA follow-up bill, the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), also eventually overturned."
...ahhh...so, history repeats apparently...only no blue ribbons this time around? For ~shame~... I hope it does pass...just so we can all have the satisfaction of watching the Supreme Court deliver a swift ass blistering! :D

This is the shit that I'm talking about

All of these redirects were originally articles that some asshole editor decided weren't "good enough" and redirected to "shit nobody cares about" and some other shit. This is an abuse of your privileges. The job of deleting articles falls solely in the hands of Sysops. If you don't like something, throw a template on it and/or contact and admin, DO NOT blank articles (unless they are advertising spam), DO NOT redirect them and DO NOT lock them. Let the sysops do their duties. We don't have 40 sysops like ed.com did for a reason. --zaiger (talk) 19:24, 17 December 2011 (CET)

Patrolling edits

Could the sysops start making sure they are marking edits as patrolled please? This is to make sure that people aren't sneaking in spam or other any undesirable actions. I am guilty of this too, just keep it in mind when going through recent changes. When you see a red "!" next to a new edit that is not from another sysop just click the (diff|xxx) and then [Mark as patrolled], thanks. --zaiger (talk) 22:31, 17 December 2011 (CET)

Seriously? And sysop edits are automatically marked patrolled. And we should at least give editors autopatrolled too. TKN 22:55, 17 December 2011 (CET)
I second the idea of giving editors autopatrolled, editor is not an automatic right like autoconfirmed is, it's something you earn through the trust of others, so unless you're a fucking moron and go and fuck up a lot of pages (if you do this you shouldn't have the rights in the first place) then I see no harm in that. ~Oblique 23:05, 17 December 2011 (CET)
What do you mean seriously? It's a simple request, if you check an edit, mark it as patrolled. No need to act all indignant like I am asking you to fucking strain yourself or something. What the fuck do you have sysop for if you aren't willing to help other sysops know if something has been checked or not? And no I can't give editor autopatrol because as of right now they are all need to have their edits checked. --zaiger (talk) 03:12, 18 December 2011 (CET)
And no it is not a "trusted" position, we give editor to anyone who asks as long as they edit regularly. --zaiger (talk) 03:14, 18 December 2011 (CET)

  • moarhate makes an interesting point. There was a time when most of ED's AOTN were home-grown. See: Meme Combining, You, and ED's endless efforts to push the popularization of the term an hero.

Since the birth of ED.ch most of the featured articles have been about internet nobodies and their butthurt over ED.ch's new reign of terror. It's kind of like when SNL switched from a character-driven show to a politically-themed show. It's lost some of the magic. To be perfectly honest, lately I've been finding better articles in the factoid section. This could be remedied if the Sysops made a conscious effort to feature the articles that contain rich, lulzy content rather than the ones that tell a story of nerd rage. Making Comic, Help a Nigga' Out.

About 2 weeks ago, after reading ED and the awesome history of our fair interbutts for about 3 years, I decided to do a 4chan based war comic based on events in internet history. So far I've decided to adapt:

I've made a few mock-ups, converted 4Chan into a sprawling island city-state (with ED, SA, and Memebase on its coast), and have the first seven pages done. I've been trying to start a revival of The Grand And Glorious Empire Of The Meow...although technically speaking every ED, 4Chan, SA, etc regular is already a Meower, simply because they're all based upon original Usenet trolling culture. Effectively the original form of Anonymous and such. Meow?

Minor conflict? LOL 4Chan would have never even ~existed~ without the Meow Wars. The Meow Wars was effectively ~the~ starting point for online trolling culture, first giving rise to groups like the Flonk, AF, AUK, etc which then in turn inspired all the World Wide Waste groups and communities. In fact ~most~ of 4Chan's little "rules" are ripped off Usenet and IRC memes from the late 90s, along with a heavy rapeage of pop-tween mainstream media at the time....V For Vendetta, Fight Club, various comic slurpage, etc, etc. Most of the originals are better, like number 31, "TITS or GTFO", was originally PTOGTFO (post tits or get the fuck out). Imagine if 4Chan was able to pull a DDoS attack on the WHOLE of the entire Internet itself for nearly a YEAR straight...~that~ is what the Meow Wars was...a good decade before DDoS attacks even existed! You have no idea just how epic it was, it literally brought the whole of the grid to its fucking knees! --Onideus 13:23, 22 December 2011 (CET)

It's not pollution or industry that's killing us all or screwing up the air, it's PEOPLE, too many gawd damn stupid fuckin monkeys!
And while I certainly admire the bold and admirable work of the United States Military to dump over 350 TONS of nuclear waste material all over the entire sand nigger population in the form of "depleted uranium rounds" (such a lovely, cutesy, innocent sounding name), in an effort to ensure that those filthy bastards won't ever be able to reproduce...yeah, it's not enough, seriously, the stupidity is reaching an epidemic level! BAWWW here. 19:21, 23 December 2011 (CET)

They won't play with me anymore.  :(
The last one I got from YouTube, well, the only one, I went on the hunt, contacted YouTube directly, demanded that they give me the full copy of the DMCA notice including all relevant personal details as ~required~ by the DMCA...they fumbled out some really shit excuses. I then went off on an invective rant about how making claims of false DMCA notices without a genuine one being filed constitutes as a federal felony under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and as a result their owners could be looking at facing time in a federal prison, etc, etc...they apologized after that...profusely...and some uber head management person personally guaranteed me that it would never, ever, EVER happen again. Which is slightly disappointing...it's not much fun when they don't struggle at all. It is nice when they give you free stuff though. You'd be amazed at what you can get large corporate entities to fork over to you without even second guessing. My magical, fully uncapped cable modem that works anywhere in the United States, free of charge, courtesy of Charter, is one of my most prized wins.
Mmmm, some are more inclined to give freebies than others. For example Carl's Junior and Lego gives out stuff to their fan communities all the freakin time. I got a $25 gift card from Carl's Junior simply for writing them a two paragraph e-mail! Lots of corporations really like being buttered up and if you take the time (hardly any at all), you can get all sorts of neat coupons, freebies, gift cards, offers, etc.
...of course there are some who simply steal yer fuckin stuff without so much as a thank you...like Hormel for example, the filthy little crotch crickets! --Onideus 20:23, 23 December 2011 (CET)
Proof of this plz. This interests me. - Vinland 20:39, 23 December 2011 (CET)
The cable modem? Or the YouTube stuff? That was all phone calls, no e-mails. I did recently get PayPal to break one of their own supposedly "unbreakable rules", regarding access to funds (supposedly you have to wait THREE DAYS after the person gets their merchandise and posts positive feedback)...but you can get them to release it on the same day if you threaten to report them to the FDIC for investment fraud. :3
I can put up that e-mail if you want to see it. I do have ~other~ e-mails similar to the conversation with YouTube, regarding attempted DMCA claims against my various servers. Uh...keep in mind though, the MPAA/RIAA do *NOT* play fair, and while I was able to openly pirate data on my primary server that certainly didn't stop them from hammering it into oblivion with one of the largest DDoS attacks in history (against a single individual). They're used to getting what they want...one way or the other.
There might be pictures of my magical cable modem up on my FB account somewhere...it's not much to look at though. It's actually becoming a bit worrisome because it's over ten years old and the connector on the back already broke, had to patch it back together with some duct tape...I'm thinkin they probably won't be inclined to give me a new one if I ask...given that it's been about a decade.

Just create a new account. An indef block just means they blocked your account. Your IP is only auto-blocked for a day or so after your account is blocked, after that you can create as many new accounts as you like. --zaiger (talk) 17:27, 29 December 2011 (CET)
