About ED

Fashioned in the spirit of Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, Encyclopedia Dramatica's purpose is to provide a central catalog for the e-public to view parody and satire of drama, memes, e-pals, and other interesting happenings on the Internets. Our goal is to provide comprehensive, reference-style parody, to poke fun at everyone and everything. You can read more about the origin of Encyclopedia Dramatica in our About section.

Before making any contributions, be sure you have read over all of our policies. We will not hesitate to revert any idiotic edits and call you out for your stupidity.

Ways to Help


Users

All are welcome, as long as you read and agree to the general disclaimer. The only real requirement is to create an email-confirmed account to edit articles (no anonymous editing allowed). GO TO THE FORUM, IRC, TELEGRAM, OR ASK ONE OF OUR ADMINS ON THEIR USER-TALK-PAGES FOR HELP. KTHX.

General
  • Got a lulzworthy subject you feel needs to be written about? Submit it to the Needed/Proposed page and someone might pick it up. Make sure you check to see if there's already an article about the subject first.


Writing
  • Write an article. This is the best thing you can do for ED.
  • Check the Bad New Articles portal to see if there's anything that ought to be expanded or cleaned up.Avoid putting deathnotices on articles as there are usually better ways to do shit
  • Check the list of wanted articles. This is automatically generated when two or more pages contain links to a page that doesn't yet exist.


Front page


Images
  • Add images to articles, or upload better versions of wanted images. Make sure you give your image a detailed name instead of a bunch of symbols or numbers so search engines can actually find them and link to them easier.
  • Browse though unused images and files and find homes for them. Do not delete or put death notices on duplicate images, use the {{duplicate}} template instead.


Maintenance
  • Categorize articles. We have a list of existing categories and a list of uncategorized articles. To add an article to a category, click that page's edit link and at the bottom of the entry, type [[Category: (name of category)]] and click "Save Page." Use the "Show Preview" button to make sure you typed a category that exists (red links mean you failed). DO NOT create new categories.
  • Update/Rotate a Portal. Seriously, this would be highly appreciated. The goal is to have each one changed once every two weeks or so. Anyone can do this.


Request editor privs

If you're interested in helping out further, request editor privs, assuming you've been around for a couple months or have otherwise proved yourself.

Editors

Editors are able to move and edit protected pages. They are expected to help maintain the Main Page. If you're a recently promoted editor and are unsure about something, ask for assistance. Don't be afraid of making mistakes.

  • Check to make sure all the XOTN are set for the Main Page
  • Review NewFiles for content that violates ED Policy. Editors can tag with {{delete}}.

$wgUseInstantCommons

hi: the wiki is currently configured to display images from Wikimedia Commons when the file is missing locally. for instance a link to File:112.jpg (a file that is either missing or was never here) uses a Commons redirect to a picture of a Volvo. pls see this page at MediaWiki.org. apparently $wgUseInstantCommons is currently set to true. i presume it needs to be set to false. :) Hipcrime (talk) 11:07, 10 December 2020 (PST)

edit filter II electric etcetera

hi: the edit filter is tripping me up again:

skipcaptcha rights

At the moment, only bots and administrators have the skipcaptcha right. This makes editing slow and tedious for everyone else. Can the skipcaptcha bit please be to granted to Autoconfirmed users, Automoderated users, and EDitors as well? --Ld3105 (talk) 12:45, 2 March 2021 (EST)

Update to Progress

To: Ld3105 Conciërge Kapitein-Commandant Tabs Deceptive Hipcrime

I would like to give an update to our progress and what we have left to do.
Our first priority is to fix the images. I am happy to report a solution has been found and is being implemented. We are waiting on the webmaster to download the sorted files.
In the meantime, LD3105 and others should hold off uploading images. First, the files will not overwrite when using mass uploader, or when caught in the mod que. Technically the files are not in the right directory, but the wiki does not know that
Second, it may be redundant. The fix we are working on should be done by tomorrow, so most of these files should be there. We will have broken files primarily from 2018 onward. Those should not trigger the overwrite flag.
Once that is done, we will work on the Issues hipcrime and Co. have laid out. (commons linking, spam filter, skipcaptcha, moderation, and increasing the size of forum icons).
I thought Admins can modify the whitelist and blacklist, I think it's a wiki page? I will check. I will also ask for the localsettings.php , with the server info redacted and allow you guys to suggest changes to it. I will DM hipcrime, Tabs, and whoever else on the forum.
I'm not a wiki guy, so excuse my lack of knowledge. I will try to get this fixed ASAP, or point you to the right direction. Hopefully this week we will be at 99%. --Umkemesik

  • Yes, the blacklist and whitelist pages (examples given) are in fact wiki pages, under the "MediaWiki:" namespace, however I don't seem to have editing access to them, so I cannot modify them. • Deceptive   10:08, 4 March 2021 (EST)

Archive page

  • Okay, thanks everyone. I just wanted to check that the Archive link in Sitenotice makes sense and isn't opposed to some "archives are secret insider stuff" policy or whatever. My pet project of cleaning up Sitenotice is pretty much finished then I guess. Unless we want to try and draw more people to the forums or pisscord. Logo Change

I think we should change the main (restoration) logo on the main page. We can keep the restoration logo in all other uses. But I think it's time for ED to finally use the default logo.   • We should also set the browser favicon as well (is this handled by LocalSettings.php?), as right now it's just a standard web globe icon. The first one (crossing saber) could be used for that. As for the actual wiki logo, I think we should have a completely new branding, and make a new logo from scratch.   • Yes, forgot about that. We do plan to change the favicon ($wgFavicon), I will shoot that to our webmaster. Excellent idea, I am very excited to see what you come up with. The restoration logo that we are using looks great, but for the main site I want something a little more traditional, at least the color scheme.   • I noticed you're trying to upload a favicon. I've uploaded an HD (super-sampled) favicon with trimmed edges to get as much of the æ symbol in it as much as possible. And favicons are always 16x16 pixels. I've noticed that you use a program called "ImageReady" (based on image metadata) to edit/resize images. However, I recommend you use Paint.Net, as it's very versatile and easy to use. You can also download plugins for it here, no need to torrent anything. file upload size limit

hi, i found a video from the Mewen redirect that is hosted by Wayback, but it is 9.1 mb, and the limit is apparently no longer 100mb but now it is 8mb. would someone please download this from there and upload (hopefully via Special:Upload instead of any wiki trickery but i will take what i can get). orrrrr someone could assign rights to allow larger uploads (100mb never worked for me, and i think the MediaWiki limit is/was 32mb) for the appropriate group. plzkthx. :) Hipcrime (talk) 23:07, 12 May 2021 (EDT)
